Lesson 1 · The past: был, была, было, были

For the parent — 15 minutes

Goal this week. Your child says what they did yesterday, using the past tense of every verb they know; says where they were with был / была / были [BIL / bi-LAH / BI-lee]; and meets the two verbs whose past tense breaks the pattern: шёл [SHOL] (went on foot) and ел [YEL] (ate).

What to do.

1. Print Worksheet 1 (attached below); name and date at the top right.

3. Learn and Practise on the screen — 6 minutes. Ask for three things your child did yesterday: Вчера я… [fchi-RAH ya].
4. Your child completes the worksheet by hand — 6 minutes.

What “done” looks like. The worksheet is filled in; your child puts any known verb into the past for he, she and they, and says Я был в парке [ya BIL f PAR-kye] (a boy) or Я была в парке [ya bi-LAH f PAR-kye] (a girl) without stopping to think.

You do not need to speak Russian. Every Russian word in these instructions has its pronunciation in brackets, the stressed syllable in capitals: вчера [fchi-RAH].

Three verb families and seven words for talking about yesterday. Tap a word to hear it.

Learn

The rule you already know. Take the dictionary form, cut off -ть, add -л for he, -ла for she, -ло for it, -ли for we, you and they. Читать → читал, читала, читало, читали. Every verb you have met works the same way: играл, гуляла, слушали, рисовал, писала, говорил, любила, хотели, пил, ехала, спали, делал.

Who is speaking? With я and ты the ending follows the person. A boy says Я читал; a girl says Я читала. To a boy: Ты играл? To a girl: Ты играла? With мы, вы and они it is always -ли: Мы гуляли. Вы читали? Они играли.

Was and were. To be has no present tense in Russian (Я дома), but in the past it comes back: был, была, было, были. Add a place with в or на and the -е ending you know: Я был в парке. Мама была в магазине. Мы были в зоопарке. Ты была в школе? It was goes with weather words: Вчера было тепло.

Not. Put не in front: Я не был в кино. Она не была дома.

A verb with a tail. Учиться keeps its tail: учился, училась, учились. After a consonant the tail is -ся, after a vowel -сь.

Two verbs that break the rule. To go on foot is идти, but its past does not look like it: он шёл, она шла, они шли. To eat is есть, and its past is он ел, она ела, они ели. Learn these as words of their own. To go by transport, ехать, is regular: ехал, ехала, ехали.

Read each line aloud, slowly, then again a little faster. Lines 1–5 are sentences; line 6 is a short text.

6. Вчера. Вчера я был в зоопарке. Там было тепло. Я долго гулял. В зоопарке были медведь, волк и лиса. Медведь спал. Волк ел мясо. Лиса не спала и не ела. Потом мы шли домой. Дома я ел суп и хлеб и пил молоко. Вечером я читал книгу и рисовал зоопарк. Мама говорила: «Молодец!» (An original text written for this lesson.)

Print Worksheet 1 from the attachments below. It has a verb table to put into the past, six sentences to complete with был / была / было / были, a short text with three questions, and three lines for your child’s own sentences about yesterday.

Answer key (for the parent)

• Task 1, past tense table: читать → читал, читала, читали; играть → играл, играла, играли; гулять → гулял, гуляла, гуляли; писать → писал, писала, писали; идти → шёл, шла, шли; есть → ел, ела, ели. Шёл written with е instead of ё is a common slip — point it out once.
• Task 2, was / were: 1 был [BIL] for a boy or была [bi-LAH] for a girl (both correct); 2 была; 3 был; 4 были [BI-lee]; 5 было [BI-la]; 6 были.
• Task 3, read and answer: Where was Ваня? — В бассейне [v ba-SYEY-nye]. What did he eat? — Яблоко [YAB-la-ka]. Who slept? — Кот [KOT].
• Task 4, three sentences: any three sentences beginning Вчера я… with a verb ending in -л (boy) or -ла (girl). Spelling slips do not matter this week; the ending does.
• Say it: tick the box if your child told you three things they did yesterday.
